Most people leave their smartphone on the nightstand overnight, just centimetres from their head. Even while you sleep, the device keeps transmitting radio signals. This article is not about blue light or screen time. It is about the radio-frequency radiation itself: what happens overnight, and how to reduce close-body exposure in the bedroom.

Why your phone keeps transmitting at night
A smartphone is not inactive just because the screen is off. It keeps its connection to the mobile network, searches for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and receives messages, updates and notifications in the background. As long as the device is switched on and has reception, it emits electromagnetic fields. On the nightstand, that means seven to eight hours of close-body exposure, night after night.
Radiation or blue light? Two different topics
Two things are often mixed up when it comes to phones and sleep. Blue light affects your sleep rhythm because it influences melatonin production. What the research actually says
Phone radiation is non-ionising, and for devices within the legal limits there is no proven short-term harm. The World Health Organization classifies radio-frequency fields as possibly carcinogenic (Group 2B), which means there are indications but no confirmed causal link. Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection recommends reducing avoidable exposure as a precaution. Seven to eight hours next to your head is one of the easiest exposures to avoid.
What actually helps at night
Turn on airplane mode. In airplane mode the device stops transmitting radio signals, and alarm and clock still work. It is the single most effective step if you do not need to be reachable. It does not make the phone field-free, though: processor, display and battery circuitry still produce low-frequency fields.
Create distance. Electromagnetic fields fall off with the square of the distance. Moving the phone from the nightstand to the other side of the room reduces exposure significantly.
Use a traditional alarm clock, or shield the phone. If you do not need the phone as an alarm, there is no reason to keep it within reach. If you need to stay reachable at night
Not everyone can switch to airplane mode overnight, for example when on call or for family reasons. In that case, distance is the most important measure: the further the device is from your head, the lower the exposure. If instead you want to take your phone offline for the night without switching it off, you can place it in full shielding. Should I put my phone in airplane mode at night?
If you do not need to be reachable, it is the most effective measure: the device transmits no radio signals and alarm and clock still work. It is not a radiation-free state, though. The electronics still produce low-frequency fields, so distance stays worthwhile.
Is it harmful to sleep with the phone next to the bed?

Is it enough to move the phone further away?
