Why airplane mode is not enough

Airplane mode is a software setting. It switches off the mobile radio, but the GPS receiver stays active, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be switched back on manually, and the Find My network locates your device through Bluetooth signals picked up by other devices nearby.

A Faraday case works physically. It encloses the device in a conductive fabric and blocks all incoming and outgoing signals when fully closed. That works regardless of which apps are installed, which permissions were granted, or whether a security vulnerability exists.

What a Faraday phone pouch blocks

When fully closed, every radio connection is cut: mobile (GSM, LTE, 5G), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, as well as RFID and NFC. The device transmits nothing and receives nothing. It cannot be located, cannot be contacted and cannot be read out.

When a Faraday case makes sense

Confidential conversations. Turning the phone face down is not enough if nothing in the room should be listening.

Going deliberately offline. No notifications, no reachability, no location data.

Travel and border crossings. The device stays completely cut off from the network.

Suspicious trackers. An unknown AirTag inside a closed case can neither transmit nor be located.

Anti-tracking: what actually helps

Software settings are worthwhile and should be the foundation. Restrict permissions, disable the advertising ID, use location services deliberately. Their limit is reached where the radio signal itself is the problem. A signal that has left the device cannot be recalled with a setting.

Stickers, harmonisers and similar products block no signals. Look for tested shielding performance rather than marketing promises.

How to test your case

1. Put the phone inside and close the case completely.
2. Call it. It should not ring.
3. Try to locate it via Find My. It should not be findable.

If the device responds, the case is not blocking effectively.

Full blocking, or shielding on the body?

A Faraday case takes the device completely off the network. If you want to stay reachable while reducing radiation towards your body, directional shielding is the more suitable solution.
